In the 1830s, naval surgeons’ claims brought them into direct conflict with their medical colleagues on land, as well as with the colonial governor, George Arthur. Beyond their authority at sea, surgeons’ journals and correspondence brought debates about penal reform in Britain into direct conversation with debates about colonial transportation. As their authority grew, naval surgeons on convict ships increasingly used their medical observations about the health of convicts to make pointed and sustained criticisms of British penal reforms. there were plenty of shows in the 90s i would have love to swap w/ this one.From 1815, naval surgeons accompanied all convict voyages from Britain and Ireland to the Australian colonies. I look at this set list often and have warm fuzzies, but also apang of regret- that a great show like this was somewhat "wasted" on me as a newbie. The last time i was in the coliseum was for the circus (i was seven) walking up the tree lined avenue this time was WAY different than in 1973. ![]()
